Join Max to climb the Chinese Hillside at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and discover eight Chinese plants to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The tour ends with a view of the Edinburgh skyline.
Founded in 1670, the Garden is one of the oldest botanic gardens in the UK. The planting of the Chinese Hillside reflects the Garden’s ongoing study of the rich diversity of Chinese plants. Today there are close links with botanists in China, enabling research into a flora that accounts for roughly one in eight of all known plants.
As it is winter the tour focuses on the beautiful bark of the trees in this woodland garden, which gives an impression of the natural forests of Yunnan. Among the gems of this tour are the rare dove tree that became a prize for plant hunters and the curious candy floss tree that gives off a sweet sugary aroma when the leaves fall in autumn.
You’ll finish the tour with a glimpse of Edinburgh Castle and the impressive skyline of the city visible from the Garden.
